Birth stories: Birthing pool & freezer stocks

Due date: November 27

Birth date: November 24

Weight: 6.2lbs

Length of labour: 8h

Baby no: 2

How did you feel during pregnancy?

Tired! It’s much harder the second time around when you’re running about after a toddler. That said, I didn’t have much morning sickness and was very lucky that it was a straightforward pregnancy

What were you most looking forward to?

Time at home with my baby. My job is very stressful and hectic, and I was so delighted when I finished work and was able to relax at home and prepare for the birth

What did you do to prepare for the birth of your baby?

I had lots of back problems after the birth of my first baby, so second time around I did pilates right up until 38 weeks with a fantastic instructor and it really helped to protect my back and keep up my core strength. I also went to Cook and filled my freezer to the brim. No one wants to cook right after giving birth!

Your labour story:

We had lots of false alarms prior to Seb’s arrival so when contractions started on the morning of November 24th I told my husband it was probably nothing and to go to work regardless. By lunchtime I was in established labour and called him home. I also called the community midwife as I wanted a home birth. The midwife came and assessed me but said it was still early on and to go to the hospital just to check that all was well as the baby’s kicks had slowed. I arrived at the hospital, was pronounced 6cm dilated and sent to the birthing centre where my waters broke, I got into the birthing pool and pushed Seb out in under 14 minutes! My husband, who had gone to buy sandwiches, made it back just in the nick of time. It was lightning quick

Do you think the water helped you?

I think the water made me feel more comfortable and relaxed. It definitely helped me to move around and get in the best position. it was super quick and for that I am so thankful.

How did you feel at the first sight of your baby

I loved him from the very second I saw him. It was such a different experience to my first birth which was quite traumatic and so took me a while to bond with my daughter.

What three pieces of advice would you give to your pregnant self now?

Buy more food for that freezer!
Take time for yourself. Even if it’s just a quick bath in the evening. It’s so important to look after yourself
Accept all the help that is offered. Don’t try to do it all yourself

How was the first week for you?

I was tired and a bit sore after the birth, but my daughter was still going to nursery which was nice for her as she still had a routine and time to herself, and my husband and I had some quality time to bond with Seb while she was out. I stayed in bed pretty much all week and it was glorious
